LOOKIN' LIKE I CAUGHT A SLICK
Bald headed. Gap toothed. Rebellious beyond repair. Meet
Slick Woods – the model grabbing the world by its balls and making it swing in
whichever direction she wishes. She has etched out her own lane with her
strikingly unique features and is speeding through it, living her best life.
Long gone are the days when models were mere Barbie dolls,
pulled by the strings of designers, up and down the catwalk never to be seen
until the following season. Today they have a voice and purpose because they
refuse to be in the shadows. Models all over the world are being activating and pioneers
in a movement that they wouldn’t have dared to participate in before. Now they’re
using their platform to speak the fuck up for what they believe in and are
doing so unapologetically.
Simone Thompson AKA Slick Woods is notorious for her
uncensored attitude and comfortability in her own skin. Afraid to fuck up her
cheques because her outgoing and overtly rebellious and controversial persona?
Not Slick. She’s ready to inflict her bold opinions and unapologetic “wokeness”
on the world. She’s that bitch that not anyone can sit with.
Slicks entrance into the world of modelling isn’t like most.
Coming from a trap house Minneapolis, the 21-year old was addicted drugs. By
the tender age of 4, her mother was incarcerated for manslaughter and is said
to be due for release later on this year. “You going to be just like your
mother.” If Slick had a pound for every time she’d heard this line, she’d be
richer that she is now and for a brief moment before her saving grace, Slick
was heading that way. She found herself behind bars for numerous credit card
scams and as a result of her criminal doings, she has not been able to see her
mum for over three years.
Model, Ash Stymest – her knight in shining armour – was
Slick’s entry into the fashion world. He discovered her at a bus stop and was
taken aback by her ever so striking features. It wasn’t long before she was
signed to a modelling agency. Since then her almost scary yet hypnotic looks have
earned her spots on the runways of Miu Miu, Yeezy, Fendi and Calvin Klein.
In latest news, Slick has become a part of Rihanna’s Fenty
Girl Gang alongside Duckie Thot, another model killing the fashion game with
her dark and luminous skin. Fenty in itself has marked a tremendous milestone
for black women as on its release, 40 shades were made available with a variety
for black women. It doesn’t come as a surprise that Rihanna handpicked Slick to
be a part of such an amazing and historical campaign where she represents a new
figure of uncompromising femininity - a tempestuous concoction of sensual meets
savage meets unorthodox.
Her salient looks aren’t the only contributing factor to her
edge, it’s her absence of fucks to give, her naughty and playful attitude and
it’s her resilience despite such a turbulent past that sets her aside from the
masses. She’s kept her shit together and is now using her story and peculiarity
to change the face of fashion. She’s tugging at norms and questioning and
flipping them in their heads. She’s thrown a spanner in the works of what is
ordinary and has built herself into a force to be reckoned with.
Here at Atypical we live for the distinct human. We cherish them
for the difference and how they use this to play their part in an
uncompromising world that tells us to be one way on a daily basis. Its figures
like offer a fresh perspective on life. We celebrate Slick not just for her
looks, but for her.
Long live Slick.
