INTERGLACTIC HEROINES AT LOUIS VUITTON RTW SS16

“Let’s go to a place where everything is made of blocks, where the only limit is your imagination. Let’s go wherever you wanna go. Climb the tallest mountains, venture down to the darkest caves. Build anything you want.”

These where the opening words to Louis Vuitton’s Ready-To-Wear SS16 collection voiceover, taking the final day at Paris Fashion Week into a digital era. Calling it a success would be very much of an understatement. Hiring Nicolas Ghesquiere as the creative director of the designer house seems to have been the perfect move as his newest collection graced the catwalks. The show embodied an intergalactic, somewhat electrical theme mirroring references of the popular ‘Minecraft’ game. Ghesquiere was inspired by the film 2046, directed by Wong Kar-wai and by the style of actress, Doona Bae.

Encapsulating the attention of attendees such as Anna Wintour, Miranda Kerr and Anna Dello Russo as the show commenced was the first model. Oozing with confidence in her composed and focused strut down the runway, she wore a bright pink biker jacket with black pockets on the breasts. As a contrast against the black and pink, the jackets details, i.e. the buttons and zip, were silver metal.

This was complimented by a black leather skirt sporting different textures and asymmetry. On her feet were gladiator sandals, flaunting a thick heavy sole and this was further emphasised as she walked down the runway. Following her footsteps where: Roos Abels, Lina Hoss, Liya Kebede and Viviane Oliveira - these were just some of a few to name.

Though each piece was uniquely crafted – some of which featured the iconic LV monogram – there was a clear cohesion interwoven within the collection. Though the looks were generally quite androgynous, they did sway towards a more feminine silhouette. A trench coat, snakeskin boots, waistcoats and plenty of leather were some of the key details of this collection.

To further add to the atmosphere, the runways were lined with large screens which played fast and colour visuals which connoted fast movement, colour and life. The makeup of the models was kept minimal and natural allowing the tiny yet striking detail of thick eyelashes lining to top and less than a quarter of the bottom of the eye bring out their eyes.

To end the affair and create the highlight of the show, all the models took a final synchronised walk around the maze-like runway.
